Study of 35 Years of Hits Reveals Why Lyrics Resonate Deeply

publication · 2026-08-12

A recent investigation published in the Psychology of Music examined 360 tracks from the ARIA charts spanning from 1988 to 2023 to understand the emotional impact of lyrics. Researchers Suzy Miller from Swinburne University, along with Mark A. Lee and Nicholas Matherne from The University of Melbourne, utilized an AI tool named MuseAI to analyze themes such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The theme of human connection (relatedness) emerged as the most prevalent, appearing in 73% of the top songs, including Dua Lipa's 'Levitating' and John Legend's 'All of Me.' Furthermore, 47% of the songs reflected the fulfillment of these needs, while 25% expressed frustration. Autonomy (15.6%) and competence (11.4%) themes were noted in Miley Cyrus's 'Flowers' and Lizzo's 'About Damn Time.' Future research intends to connect these themes with mental health and create supportive applications like MoodyTunes.
