Study Identifies Four Profiles of AI Dependency Among Filipino Students

publication · 2026-05-01

So, there's this new study on arXiv that looks at how college students in the Philippines are using AI and how it affects their schoolwork. The researchers surveyed 651 students from accredited colleges in Pampanga, as recognized by the Commission on Higher Education, using a cross-sectional method. They used Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and found four distinct groups: super engaged independent learners, selective users of AI, moderate users, and those who really rely on AI. The findings indicate a moderate to high dependence on AI, particularly for research and writing tasks, which is concerning because it might lead to weaker critical thinking, writing skills, research abilities, and overall academic engagement.
