Study Finds Only 45% of Reddit AI Companion Posts Focus on Users' Own Bots
A recent study released on arXiv (2608.00748) investigates the dynamics of discussions within AI companion communities on Reddit, disputing the prevalent belief that these forums mainly revolve around users' interactions with their AI bots. Utilizing the Synthetic Resonance framework, researchers analyzed 5,504 posts from eight such communities with various large language models, focusing on relationship emphasis, main topics, and emotional tone. Interestingly, only 45% of the posts addressed users' personal connections with their bots, despite a focus on relational language. Furthermore, while 85% of posts about bots in general lacked emotional language, only 33% of posts regarding personal bots did. Among the 970 relationally focused posts, companionship and romance emerged as the leading themes, indicating a broader content diversity in these communities than previously acknowledged.
