Study Finds ChatGPT-4 Requires Human Post-Editing for Literary Translation in Yemeni Context

A recent study investigated the role of artificial intelligence in translation, specifically examining ChatGPT-4's capabilities in literary contexts. Researchers employed a mixed-method approach involving 30 professional translators who evaluated and post-edited AI-generated translations of Arabic and English literary texts. Findings revealed that while AI enhances translation speed and accessibility, it struggles with cultural, stylistic, and figurative language elements. Participants consistently affirmed the need for human post-editing, particularly for novels and drama. The research concludes that AI should function as a supportive tool rather than replacing human translators, emphasizing that human expertise remains crucial for ensuring translation quality and cultural appropriateness. This study contributes to understanding human-machine collaboration models in translation workflows.
