Studio Wok's PAN Deli Challenges Corporate Uniformity in Milan

architecture-design · 2026-05-19

Studio Wok, located in Milan, has crafted the interior of PAN deli, a specialty coffee shop, intentionally contrasting the bland commercial architecture of its corporate surroundings. The design steers clear of typical Japanese minimalism and Italian cafeteria styles, employing three small architectural features to disrupt the expansive floor plan and create unique micro-environments. The focal point is a gridded service counter made of industrial fiberglass grating, seamlessly integrated with raw concrete flooring. Behind the service area, warm birch plywood provides tactile contrast and incorporates displays and seating. Textured elements like stepped fabric ceiling panels and raw plaster walls enhance the space, while translucent white fabric banners soften the industrial ceiling. An intimate seating area, illuminated by a custom linear light inspired by Japanese noren curtains, creates a tranquil zone. A frosted glass window links the concealed kitchen to the dining area, casting warm light during busy hours. The design emphasizes material quality and precise joinery over superficial embellishments, subtly referencing Japanese aesthetics. Studio Wok’s vision highlights the potential for creating neighborhood intimacy within a modern urban environment.
