Studio Weave clads London public toilet in reused corporate granite

architecture-design · 2026-05-29

Studio Weave has finalized a public restroom at Maida Hill Market in North Paddington, London, featuring pink Finnish granite and Norwegian larvikite sourced from a decommissioned office at Broadgate in the City of London. This stone, originally used for corporate office facades, now constitutes the structural walls of three fully accessible, step-free toilets. The Stone Masonry Company preserved the slabs in their large, minimally processed form, referring to the city as an 'urban quarry' for premium materials. Designed for future disassembly and reuse, the restroom replaces buried Victorian facilities, elevating them to street level. Funded in part by Westminster City Council, approximately £1.27 million from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund supported the surrounding area. The British Toilet Association notes a 40% decline in public toilets over the last decade, with a 2019 study revealing that one in five Britons limit outings due to insufficient accessible toilets.
