Studio Systems at the American Academy in Rome Explores the Contemporary Artist's Studio

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition 'Studio Systems' at the American Academy in Rome examines the evolving nature of the artist's studio through works by eleven artists. Curated by Peter Benson Miller, the show traces two historical threads: Marcel Duchamp's conceptual challenge to traditional studio practice, from readymades to his Boîte-en-valise, and Philip Guston's decision in the late 1960s to retreat to his Woodstock studio despite growing criticism of the studio as a site of isolation. In 1971, Daniel Buren argued that staying in the studio led to 'total oblivion,' while leaving it alienated the artist from their origins. John Baldessari's 'Post Studio Art' course at CalArts in the early 1970s prophesied the end of the traditional studio. The exhibition explores how contemporary artists navigate mobile, digital, and global networks, with studios ranging from architecturally defined spaces like those at the American Academy to nomadic practices. Critics like Lane Relyea and Michelle Grabner have reclaimed the studio as a valid alternative, while Jens Hoffmann situates it in an 'expanded field.' The show includes works by Dawn Kasper, whose 2012 Whitney Biennial piece 'This Could Be Something If I Let It' is featured. On June 8, fellows will hold Open Studios, and on June 16, a performance by Bryony Roberts closes the program.
