Studio Modijefsky Transforms 1920s Dutch Waterfront House into Domestic Ecosystem

architecture-design · 2026-05-20

Amsterdam-based Studio Modijefsky renovated a protected 1920s house on the Rijn riverbank, adding new volumes including a bar, wellness suite, wine room, and boathouse across 405 square metres of interior and 105 of exterior. The design reconfigures the fragmented ground floor plan into a central corridor spine with a bespoke staircase illuminated by a rooflight. Material palette of walnut wood, natural stone, wool upholstery, and copper accents builds tonal warmth. A see-through fireplace connects living room and serre. The kitchen features a dark walnut table and island facing the garden. The ground-floor extension includes a bar with brass geometric structures, Zellige tiles, terrazzo, and marble, transitioning to a wellness area with engraved travertine walls and jacuzzi. A separate boathouse and wine room echo the main palette. The upper floor uses lighter versions of the same materials. The garden by Arjan Boekel connects all volumes. The project is named Home Wilhelminalaan.
