Studio Michael Burman designs KEIT Bakery in Berlin with reclaimed millstone counter and washi paper walls
Studio Michael Burman has completed the interior design for KEIT Bakery in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. The compact space presents bread-making through a textural minimalism defined by stone, wood, and steel. A central counter, formed from a reclaimed millstone cut into three segments and reassembled into a fan-like sequence, guides customer movement. This monumental element is complemented by a stainless-steel extension that integrates storage and workspace. Walls are clad in handmade washi paper, which diffuses light and softens the harder materials. An elongated pendant light, also made of washi, casts a warm glow over the counter. Douglas fir appears in the counter base, a bench, and a shelving unit, adding warmth and tactile grain. Bread is displayed on a pared-back stainless-steel shelving system, where straight lines contrast with irregular baked forms. A deep brown floor ties the interior together, absorbing light and reinforcing material contrasts. The design balances handcrafted materials with precise industrial elements, creating a consistent visual language throughout the bakery. Photography for the project was handled by Robert Rieger.
