Studio Job designs surreal set for Mika's new TV show Stasera CasaMika
Belgian design duo Studio Job has created the set for Mika's upcoming television program Stasera CasaMika, featuring a monumental throne, a Swarovski crystal globe, a graffiti-covered machine, and a backwards-running clock that still tells correct time. The collaboration between the Lebanese-born singer and the award-winning Antwerp-based studio builds on their previous work for Mika's tour sets. Studio Job, founded by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel after meeting at the Dutch Design Academy in Eindhoven, is known for blending neo-gothic and pop aesthetics, working at the intersection of art and design. Their work has been exhibited in over 40 museums worldwide. For Stasera CasaMika, the designers drew from a heterogeneous mix of stylistic references including classical German iconography, Louis XV, and Big Ben, which inspired the clock face. Smeets described the approach as 'European pop,' contrasting it with American pop's focus on fast food and supermarkets. The set incorporates both ancient techniques like gilding and bronze casting and modern methods such as laser cutting and 3D printing, reflecting the duo's interest in craftsmanship and applied arts. The show marks another chapter in Studio Job's career, which includes stage design for Viktor & Rolf's autumn-winter fashion show featuring stylized floral motifs reminiscent of British Arts and Crafts.
