Studio Ghibli Theme Park Opens November 1 in Nagakute

other · 2026-04-27

A theme park dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli will open on November 1, 2022, in Nagakute, 140 km from Kyoto. Announced in 2018, the park spans nearly 200 hectares with a $290 million investment. Initially only the area based on My Neighbor Totoro will open, featuring faithful film set reconstructions and large-scale sculptures. Other sections inspired by Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle will follow. The entire park is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Studio Ghibli already operates the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, near Tokyo, whose tickets sell out monthly. Meanwhile, Miyazaki is working on his twelfth animated film, How Do You Live?, an adaptation of Genzaburō Yoshino's 1937 novel. He recently had a retrospective at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
