Studio Gang's timber-shell Hudson Valley Shakespeare theatre opens

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare company will open its first permanent home, the Samuel H Scripps Theater Center, designed by Studio Gang. The project, six years in the making, features a 451-seat main stage under a curved timber-framed grid shell spanning 6,800 sq ft. The indoor-outdoor setting supports year-round operations with rehearsal, performance, education, and amenity spaces, plus technical updates and improved accessibility. Landscape architects Nelson Byrd Woltz integrated the building into the 98-acre site with pathways, picnic areas, and native meadows as part of a 2020 masterplan. Artistic director Davis McCallum noted the realization of a vision rooted in language, landscape, and community. The first season begins 10 June 2026 with As You Like It, directed by Miriam Laube. Studio founder Jeanne Gang emphasized the commitment to creating spaces that connect people to nature. The theatre was made possible by Christopher Davis's donation of the landscape and lead philanthropic support from Wendy Scripps, honoring her father Samuel H Scripps.
