Studio Fuksas designs set for Puccini's Tosca at Rome's Baths of Caracalla

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas have created the stage design for a new production of Puccini's Tosca, running until August 9, 2024, at the Caracalla Festival in Rome. The set transforms the stage into a large white sheet of paper, an abstract space devoid of direct references to the opera's locations—Sant'Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese, and Castel Sant'Angelo. A video mapping projection pays homage to Anna Magnani on the ruins. The production marks the architects' debut in opera, fulfilling a long-held desire. The white backdrop is intended to highlight the performers, including Sonya Yoncheva, Vittorio Grigolo, Carmen Giannattasio, and Saimir Pirgu. Director Francesco Micheli describes the space as a parchment for definitive words, likely in Latin. Performances are scheduled for July 17, 24, 26, 31, and August 3, 7, and 9.
