Studio Font Scatters Pigmented Concrete Hotel Across Baja Desert

Mexico City-based Studio Font, led by Raquel Font, has completed Nereidas, a boutique hotel in the desert near Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Rather than a single volume, the project scatters three guest rooms and one communal structure across an 8,000-square-meter plot of cacti and open sky. Each guest room is a single continuous interior with integrated beds, storage, and bathrooms, oriented to capture different views of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The shared structure features two crossing roofs, a double-height fire pit, and a cascading cylindrical pool, all open along their length. The entire project is built from pigmented concrete, which shifts tone with light and intensifies after rainfall. Nereidas runs off-grid with photovoltaic solar panels, a thermosolar system, and water reuse strategies; all displaced plants were replanted on site. Studio Font frames the design as a contemporary ruin—a permanent framework open to the desert's effects. The project echoes other Mexican hospitality developments, such as V Taller's Babel in Tulum and RA!'s Laiva Hotel San Jose in San José del Cabo, which similarly prioritize ecological integration. Nereidas was completed in 2025.
