Studio Drift Debuts Outdoor Kinetic Sculpture at Venice Biennale
Studio Drift, a Dutch art collective established in 2007 by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn, is set to present a new outdoor kinetic sculpture named "Shy Society" at the 61st Venice Biennale, commencing on May 9. This installation will be located on Venice's Grand Canal, positioned between the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Ponte dell'Accademia, in front of a historic palazzo. "Shy Society" serves as an outdoor version of the studio's "Shylight" series, featuring silk-draped lights that mimic organic movements by opening and retracting like parachutes. Gordijn noted that creating the outdoor version necessitated a complete redesign to adapt to Venice's unpredictable weather. The "Shylight" series has been showcased worldwide, including venues like the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it became part of the permanent collection. Studio Drift is recognized for blending technology and design to produce nature-inspired art.
