Studio Didea: Palermo's Emerging Architecture Practice

Studio Didea, a Palermo-based architecture and interior design firm, represents a new generation of Sicilian designers committed to staying and working in their hometown. Founded by Emanuela Di Gaetano, Giuseppe De Lisi, and Nicola Giuseppe Andò, the studio's name combines syllables from their surnames and echoes the word 'idea.' Now including Alfonso Riccio and Maristella Galia, with collaborators Roberto Lombino and Agnese Abbaleo, the studio has completed residential and commercial projects characterized by minimalist, tailor-made interventions that emphasize materials, craftsmanship, and light. Their approach draws inspiration from Japanese and Scandinavian design, as well as from Luigi Ghirri, James Turrell, and Carlo Scarpa. Key projects include Casa #A210, a historic apartment with frescoed vaults and marble floors where a custom bookshelf creates visual continuity, and Sobremesa restaurant, which uses disappearing window frames and cobalt blue paint to manipulate natural light. The studio sees Palermo as undergoing a cultural renaissance, partly due to events like Manifesta, and advocates for architecture's role in improving quality of life in domestic and public spaces.
