Studio Casoli Opens New Gallery on Filicudi with Giovanni Gastel and Peter Doig Shows

Sergio Casoli, a veteran gallerist known for his unconventional approach, has opened Studio Casoli on the island of Filicudi, far from the typical white cube concept. The space is located in the village of Pecorini, where Casoli previously acquired the pensione La Sirena and its restaurant, initially with Maurizio Cattelan (who left the partnership in 2012). The gallery operates from June to September, hosting exhibitions and residencies for artists outside the tourist season. The inaugural show, "È un'isola," features photographs by Giovanni Gastel, the internationally renowned photographer who died of COVID-19 in 2020. The exhibition, organized with the Archivio Giovanni Gastel, runs until July 17, 2022, and includes images taken with a Canon G 11 over Gastel's twenty-year stays on the island, some originally shot for Elle Decor in 2012. Following this tribute, the gallery will present a show of British painter Peter Doig from July 27 to September 10, 2022. Casoli's first gallery opened in the late 1980s at corso Monforte 23 in Milan, in Lucio Fontana's former studio. In 2018, he co-founded a gallery in Rome at Palazzo Albertoni Spinola, once Mario Schifano's studio.
