Studio Azzurro creates site-specific video work for new Rome art space Musia
The new contemporary art space Musia, conceived by collector and entrepreneur Ovidio Jacorossi, has opened in central Rome. Designed by architect Carlo Iacoponi, the 1,000 sqm venue spans three levels across historical layers from Roman to Renaissance times. Alongside the inaugural exhibition "From Symbolism to Abstraction: Early 20th Century Rome in the Jacorossi Collection," curated by Enrico Crispolti with Giulia Tulino, the space features a site-specific video installation by Studio Azzurro titled "Il teatro di Pompeo." In an interview, co-founder Fabio Cirifino explains the project was born from Jacorossi's interest in their work. The installation occupies the underground area preserving part of the Theater of Pompey, using eight projections across four rooms to create a non-linear cinematic narrative. The work depicts daily Roman life interrupted by Caesar's assassination, with a table projection offering a realistic viewpoint. Cirifino notes the piece will remain on view for about a year, and hopes it will foster collaboration with young video artists. He laments that video art remains underappreciated in Italy due to a lack of specialized critics and curators.
