Studio Azzurro co-founder Paolo Rosa dies at 64

other · 2026-05-05

Paolo Rosa, co-founder of the pioneering Italian new media art group Studio Azzurro, died on August 20, 2013, at age 64 from a heart attack while on vacation in Greece. Studio Azzurro was founded in 1982 in Milan by Rosa, Fabio Cirifino, Leonardo Sangiorgi, and Stefano Roveda. The group is known for creating "sensitive environments" that integrated interactivity, video, and narrative, breaking the boundary between artwork and viewer. Their 1984 piece "Il Nuotatore (va troppo spesso ad Heidelberg)" used 24 monitors and 12 cameras to spatialize a swimmer's experience. The 1995 work "Tavoli (perché queste mani mi toccano?)" allowed viewers to touch table surfaces to activate narratives. A 1999 retrospective titled "Ambienti sensibili. Esperienza tra interattività e narrazione" curated by Maria Grazia Tolomeo was held at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. Critic Valentina Valentini wrote about the group's unique aesthetic. Rosa's last book was "L'Arte fuori di sè."
