Stuart Semple Launches Black 3.0, Excluding Anish Kapoor

other · 2026-05-04

British artist Stuart Semple has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for Black 3.0, a new black paint that he claims is the blackest and most matte in the known universe, absorbing up to 99% of light. The project explicitly prohibits Anish Kapoor, who in 2016 acquired exclusive rights to Vantablack, a pigment developed by Surrey NanoSystems for military stealth aircraft that absorbs 99.96% of light. Kapoor's monopoly sparked outrage in the international art community. Black 3.0 is Semple's third attempt at creating a super black, following Black 2.0 in 2017, which gained over 3,500 Instagram shares under #sharetheblack. The new paint is acrylic-based, uses a novel pigment called Black Magick developed by Semple's team, and is designed to work with traditional art materials. The Kickstarter page requires backers to confirm they are not Anish Kapoor or affiliated with him.
