Stripe to Acquire AI Gateway OpenRouter for Over $7B

Bloomberg reports that Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup, for more than $7 billion. OpenRouter allows customers to select different AI models for various tasks based on their needs and budget. In May, the company raised a $113 million Series B at a reported $1.3 billion valuation, with investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's Capital G. CEO Alex Atallah described OpenRouter as the equivalent of Stripe for AI, providing a single access point for different systems and preventing lock-in. The startup claims 8 million global users and access to over 400 models. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that acquisition talks were underway. Stripe declined to comment on the report.
