Street Artists Paint Climate Action Murals in Hudson Yards, New York
Four street artists have created murals on buildings in Manhattan's Hudson Yards district to promote the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative, organized by nonprofit Street Art for Mankind in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to establish the first Climate Action Outdoor Museum. Italian artist Millo (Francesco Camillo Giorgino) painted a child embracing a tree on nearly 1,000 square meters of a building on 11th Avenue near the High Line, visible from the Hudson River. The work took ten days using brushes and rollers, integrating the building's windows into the tree trunk to create a tree-house effect. Spanish artist Dulk addressed ocean ecosystem restoration, Dutch artist Mr Super A focused on sustainable plastics, and American artist Emily Ding tackled sustainable fashion. The murals were inaugurated on September 23 in the presence of UN officials and Italian consul Cesare Bieller, coinciding with the Summit of the Future, New York Climate Week, and the UN General Assembly. This follows a large mural on ecosystem restoration presented during Climate Week 2023 at the Javits Center. The project plans to expand annually, offering tangible climate optimism and concrete actions. Millo's mural is his first in New York, though he has previously created environmental works such as Nevergiveup in Santiago, Chile, and Rebirth in Genk, Belgium.
