Street Artists in Egypt and Germany Create Murals for Giulio Regeni
In response to the murder of Giulio Regeni, the Italian Cambridge researcher killed in Egypt in 2016, Egyptian street artists iAhmed, Naguib, and El Teneen have created stencil works and murals in Berlin and Cairo. Regeni was abducted on January 25, the fifth anniversary of the Tahrir Square protests, and his body was found on February 3 near Cairo. The artists use their work to protest the government of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, which they accuse of abuses. iAhmed designed stencils featuring Regeni's face with a quote from poet Nizar Qabbani. Naguib, invited by German artist Don Karl, created a portrait of Regeni alongside other Egyptian revolutionaries, with the inscription "Our Italian brother Giulio lived among us and died like us, as an Egyptian." El Teneen painted a mural in Berlin with the phrase "Giulio was one of us and was killed as we are killed." The artists aim to raise awareness and demand justice, with Naguib expressing a desire to paint in Italy.
