Street Art Revives Public Housing in Lecce's 167 B District

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

In October, four large facades of public housing in the 167 B district, a working-class neighborhood on the eastern outskirts of Lecce, were transformed by a series of artistic interventions. The 167 Art Project is a collaboration between the parish community of San Giovanni Battista in the Stadio district, local residents, and the 167/B Street lab, which has been a hub for urban art research and experimentation for over a decade. The project aims to create artworks that break social patterns, stimulate participation, and reflect the community's desire to feel fully part of the city and its future. The murals were executed by internationally renowned street artists: Mantra (France), Artez (Serbia), Julieta XLF (Spain), Bifido (Italy), and local artist Chekos'art. Chekos'art's mural pays homage to Lecce's football history and its fans, depicting players Lorusso and Pezzella.
