Street Art Project Outskirt Stories Revitalizes Turin's Falchera District
A new participatory urban art project called Outskirt Stories-Storie di Periferia is set to transform the historic Falchera Nuova neighborhood in Turin, Italy. Initiated by Turin-based street artist Xel (Alessandro Ussia) at the invitation of Aurelio Albanese, President of the Sportello del Malato and a local resident, the project began with a small mural last summer and will soon include two larger murals on private building facades in Via Delle Querce. The murals will depict the history of this peripheral area, which symbolizes unchecked urbanization following the industrial expansion and immigration of the 1950s and 1960s. The project is produced and curated by the MAU – Museo d'Arte Urbana and has received moral support from the City of Turin. It includes educational workshops for local school students, disabled youth, and neighborhood young people. The initiative follows a similar successful model in the nearby Barriera di Milano district, where thirteen blind facades were painted by Apulian street artist Millo, now a tourist attraction. Turin's Councillor for Culture Francesca Leon praised the project for its artistic and social value and its alignment with the city's cultural policies aimed at regenerating disadvantaged areas.
