Street art project brings murals to Italian prisons

other · 2026-05-05

The Non me la racconti giusta project, a collaboration between street art collective Collettivo Fx, contemporary art magazine ziguline, and photographer Antonio Sena, aims to bring public art into Italian prisons. The initiative involves inmates in the creation of murals within their facilities, with the concept and design emerging from group discussions among the prisoners rather than being imposed from outside. The first two interventions took place in November at the Casa circondariale di Ariano Irpino and the Casa di reclusione di Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, both in the province of Avellino. At Ariano Irpino, a 20×5 meter mural depicting the face of Ulysses was created; at Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, a 30×5 meter winged Totò was painted in the main walkway. The Totò image was chosen by a group of Neapolitan inmates but dedicated to all prisoners, most of whom are from Naples. Further interventions are planned in the coming months.
