Street Art, Markets, and New Projects in Milan's Lorenteggio and Giambellino Districts

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Milan's Lorenteggio and Giambellino districts, often considered the city's 'far west,' offer unexpected cultural and architectural attractions, now easily accessible via the new M4 metro line. The Oratorio di San Protaso al Lorenteggio, a thousand-year-old chapel, survived demolition threats during M4 excavations thanks to local activism. Architectural highlights include Luigi Caccia Dominioni's 1950s industrial building for Loro Parisini in Via Savona and the 'Grigioni' housing complex with red brick and beige clinker facades. Street art abounds: Orticanoodles' mural of magnolias in Via Giambellino symbolizes biodiversity and social integration; the Villaggio dei Fiori features murals from the Corba 5 Cerchi project, themed around winter sports, including works by SteReal, Kiv, and Stefania Marchetto (2023). The Alan Kurdi park, named after the drowned Kurdish child, opened recently with playgrounds, shared spaces, and a biodiversity oasis. Upcoming projects include the renovation of the Agorà ice stadium, the Mercato Comunale, and a new Lorenteggio library surrounded by 11,000 square meters of green space, all tied to the 2026 Olympics. The area's flower-named streets and the abandoned 17th-century Cascina Corba add rustic charm.
