Street Art in Yemen: Murad Subay's Story

Journalist Luca Scarcella, born in 1989, has produced a web documentary titled "Sui Muri della Libertà" that compares street art in Italy and Yemen, featuring artists Murad Subay from Sana'a and Andrea Villa from Turin. Scarcella, a freelance journalist and social media expert who has collaborated with La Stampa since 2016, created the documentary after extensive research on Yemen's education system. The project highlights how both artists use street art as an intellectual and creative response to social challenges in their respective countries. Murad Subay, often called "the Yemeni Banksy" for simplification in communication, is known for his public identity and courageous work in a war-torn environment. Scarcella first contacted Subay in 2017 after organizing a TEDx Salon at the Museo d'Arte Orientale in Turin about Yemen's endangered artistic heritage. The documentary includes illustrations by artist Libero Ruglio and web design by Sergio Sofia. Subay's work involves graffiti and community street art projects delivering strong social messages. Scarcella plans to release a new web documentary on democratization and migration, which will itself become street art through a mix of online and offline formats.
