Street Art in Palermo's Ballarò District Sparks Debate on Race and Religion

other · 2026-05-04

A series of murals in Palermo's Ballarò district, created by local artists including Igor Scalisi Palminteri, Andrea Buglisi, Alessandro Bazan, Fulvio Di Piazza, and Angelo Genova (Crazyone), has revitalized the historic Albergheria neighborhood. The project, supported by the Confraternita dei Fornai, collector Francesco Galvagno, sponsor Tommaso Piazza Colori, and the Prima Circoscrizione, began in July 2018 with Palminteri's mural of San Benedetto il Moro, the city's black patron saint. Subsequent works include Buglisi's hummingbird lifting a stone, Bazan's crowd scene 'La gente di Ballarò', Di Piazza's fish vortex, and Crazyone's tribute to actor Franco Franchi. The initiative sparked controversy when conservative journalist Camillo Langone criticized Palminteri's depiction of the saint in sneakers as 'invasionist propaganda' and 'racist', accusing the artist of promoting Islamization. Palermo's culture assessor Andrea Cusumano defended the mural, emphasizing that San Benedetto il Moro symbolizes Palermo's multicultural identity and that associating black skin with Islam is ignorant. The debate highlights broader tensions in Italy over immigration and integration. The murals are part of a grassroots regeneration effort led by the SOS Ballarò committee, aiming to improve public spaces through community involvement and art.
