Street art as cultural resistance for the Arbëreshë minority in Piana degli Albanesi, Sicily

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Since 2023, the historic Sheshi district of Piana degli Albanesi, Sicily, has been transformed into an open-air museum through nine murals and several sculptures as part of the Bashkë UrbanArt project. The initiative aims to revitalize the Arbëreshë minority community, which has been present in Italy since the 15th century and faces depopulation and cultural erosion. Artistic director Andrea Buglisi (Palermo, 1974) created the mural "Il Dono," featuring a traditional local jewel surrounded by golden gazelles and birds that echo the landscape of Lake Piana. Igor Scalisi Palminteri (Palermo, 1973) painted a Saint George mural where a gold thread runs through the dragon, symbolizing the inherent humanity even in evil. Both artists emphasize dialogue with the community and respect for local identity. Association president Giuliana Riolo notes that the quarter is experiencing a rebirth, with residents returning to public spaces. Mayor Rosario Petta highlights increased tourism, but artists stress the need for sustained institutional support beyond temporary projects. The project is funded by the municipal administration, the Sicilian Region, and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. Scalisi Palminteri criticizes the failure of institutions to provide adequate funding for linguistic minorities and education in Arbëreshë. The murals incorporate Byzantine iconography and traditional goldsmithing, referencing local artisans such as the Lucito family.
