Stormzy's #Merky Films to Co-Produce Ian Wright Biopic

The biopic about Ian Wright, the former Arsenal and England striker, is being co-produced by rapper Stormzy's film company, #Merky Films. This film will delve into Wright's challenging upbringing in Woolwich, London, where he was born in 1963 to Jamaican parents from the Windrush generation and faced difficulties with an abusive stepfather. It will showcase the pivotal role of teacher Sydney Pigden, who taught him literacy and instilled self-belief. The narrative traces Wright's path from being overlooked by clubs like Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion in his youth, through amateur leagues, to his eventual professional career. Wright, who turned pro in his early 20s and became one of Arsenal's top scorers, described the biopic as a chance to unify his story. Stormzy, as executive producer, expressed his "honour" in bringing such a significant tale to life. Since retiring in 2000, Wright has transitioned into broadcasting, featuring on BBC's World Cup coverage and Match of the Day until 2024, and was awarded an OBE in 2023. He recently co-managed a team in the Baller League alongside Chloe Kelly and Alan Shearer. Details regarding the cast, director, and release date remain unannounced.
