Storefront for Art and Architecture Launches 'Homelands' Research Cycle with Global Programming

institutional · 2026-04-20

José Esparza Chong Cuy, director of Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, has implemented yearlong research cycles that drive the institution's programming. The 'Swamplands' cycle concluded in the first quarter of 2025 with an exhibition featuring Jingru Cyan Cheng and Chen Zhan, whose work examined Thailand's Vajiralongkorn Reservoir and connections between energy infrastructure and Indigenous territories. In September, a new 16-month cycle titled 'Homelands' began, described by Esparza Chong Cuy as politically prescient and deliberately focused on a contested term. Programming for 'Homelands' launched in Goias, Brazil, at Dalton Paula's Sertão Negro school and atelier, which later presented an exhibition in Lower Manhattan that same September. Future participants in the 'Homelands' cycle will include Singaporean artist Sim Chi Yin and Kosovar artist Petrit Halilaj in the coming year. Denilson Baniwa received Storefront's annual mural commission. The previous 'Swamplands' cycle initiated with a 'Swamp Summit' held in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Esparza Chong Cuy discussed the 'Homelands' concept in an interview with Pin-Up magazine.
