Stooping Milano: Instagram page turns street furniture recovery into community art

other · 2026-04-26

Stooping Milano, an Instagram page launched in October 2021 by two Politecnico students, Giulia and Sara, has grown into a 60,000+ follower community dedicated to recovering abandoned furniture and household items from Milan's streets. The initiative, inspired by New York's 'stooping' practice, posts daily finds such as vintage sofas, appliances, and decor, all free for pickup. Beyond simple exchange, the page has fostered real-world meetups at Bar Picchio and Cascina Cuccagna for bartering and board games. The project intersects with art: on March 22, 2024, at the finissage of 'Affittasi luminosissimo bilocale' at spazioSERRA di Lancetti (a Best of Artribune 2023 winner), visitors can collect installation furniture including a TV, chairs, rug, shower curtain, and vintage phone. During Milan Design Week 2022 and 2023, Stooping Milano launched #UnwantedFurniture with AMSA, A2A, and OpenDot Lab, asking followers to donate unused objects for 10 young designers to create circular design strategies. The page also co-created a 'Milanese' deck of cards with artist Stefano Romano, collective AAA, Rivista Zero – Hyperlocal, and Modiano, with suits representing Porta Venezia, Navigli, Chinatown, and Bovisa neighborhoods, launched with a briscola tournament. Stooping Milano has inspired similar initiatives in Turin, Bologna, Pisa, and other Italian cities, transforming from a student budget project into a trendsetting model for urban recovery and community building.
