Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center Opens in New York

The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center opens June 28, 2024, at 51 Christopher Street, New York, marking the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The center, developed by the National Park Service in partnership with Pride Live with over $3 million in funding, offers a museum exhibition on the 1969 riots through photos and texts, virtual tours, and rotating exhibitions of queer and trans artists. It also hosts conferences, theater, and film screenings in a recreated dance floor space with original ceiling elements and a replica 1967 Rowe AMI jukebox. Design shows by Parsons School students are planned. The Stonewall Inn, declared a National Monument by President Barack Obama in 2016, was the site of the 1969 riots that catalyzed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The nearby Christopher Street-Sheridan Square subway station will be renamed Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument Station.
