Stonewall National Monument Listed as Most Endangered US Site

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-21

The Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village has been named one of the 11 most endangered historic places in the US by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary. The designation comes amid Trump administration efforts to control LGBTQ+ history narratives. In February 2025, the National Park Service removed all references to transgender individuals from the monument's official website and later removed the rainbow pride flag, citing a mandate allowing only the US flag. Local activists and city officials restored the flag within days. The Gilbert Baker Foundation sued the administration, settling in mid-April to allow the pride flag beneath the US flag. However, the NPS has not restored the original website text. The Stonewall Inn and Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative condemned the erasure. Other sites on the 2026 list include the President's House in Philadelphia, where a slavery exhibit was removed and court-ordered reinstalled, and the Greater Chaco Cultural Landscape, facing federal land protection repeal attempts. For the first time, the National Trust will issue $25,000 grants to each site, funded by private contributions after terminating its federal charter.
