Stone Architecture Revival and Sustainable Textile Innovations Challenge Construction Norms

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

Amin Taha, a prominent architect, along with structural engineer Steve Webb and master mason Pierre Bidaud, promotes the use of structural stone as a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete and steel. Their efforts are highlighted in the exhibit "The New Stone Age: Towards an Ethical Architecture" at the University of Toronto. They contend that stone, which has a low embodied carbon footprint, is often overlooked. Advances in technology now allow for spans of 12 meters using small stone blocks. However, a significant hurdle is the absence of grading systems for structural stone. In Amsterdam, CEO Mijke van Ballegooijen's Byborre is pioneering 3D-knitted fabrics made from recycled materials. Additionally, the Icelandic startup Dýpi has created paint from calcareous algae, while designers are utilizing volcanic byproducts to promote sustainable construction practices.

Key facts

  • Architect Amin Taha, engineer Steve Webb, and mason Pierre Bidaud advocate for structural stone to replace concrete.
  • "The New Stone Age" exhibition was held at the University of Toronto's Daniels Faculty.
  • Post-tensioned stone slabs can achieve 12-metre spans and have lower embodied carbon than cross-laminated timber.
  • Concrete production emits nearly one kilogram of CO₂ per kilogram of cement.
  • Byborre creates 3D-knitted textiles on-demand using sustainable materials like Sinterama Newlife from recycled bottles.
  • Byborre's "Textile Passport" transparently tracks water, energy, and chemical use in production.
  • Dýpi makes paint from mineral-rich calcareous algae found in Icelandic fjords.
  • Volcanic materials are used in SensiEtna tiles by Matteo Thun and lamps by Alberto Meda.
