Stone Architecture Revival and Sustainable Textile Innovations Challenge Construction Norms

Amin Taha, a prominent architect, along with structural engineer Steve Webb and master mason Pierre Bidaud, promotes the use of structural stone as a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete and steel. Their efforts are highlighted in the exhibit "The New Stone Age: Towards an Ethical Architecture" at the University of Toronto. They contend that stone, which has a low embodied carbon footprint, is often overlooked. Advances in technology now allow for spans of 12 meters using small stone blocks. However, a significant hurdle is the absence of grading systems for structural stone. In Amsterdam, CEO Mijke van Ballegooijen's Byborre is pioneering 3D-knitted fabrics made from recycled materials. Additionally, the Icelandic startup Dýpi has created paint from calcareous algae, while designers are utilizing volcanic byproducts to promote sustainable construction practices.
