Stolen Van Gogh Painting Recovered by Art Detective Arthur Brand

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Art detective Arthur Brand, known as the 'Indiana Jones of the art world' for recovering over 200 masterpieces, has retrieved a Van Gogh painting stolen in 2020 from the Singer Laren Museum in the Netherlands. The work, 'The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring' (1884), was taken on March 30, 2020, while the museum was closed due to the pandemic. Valued between €3 and €6 million, it depicts the garden of the parsonage in Nuenen where Van Gogh lived as a young man. The painting had been on loan to the Groninger Museum for a temporary exhibition of the William and Anna Singer collection. Despite an immediate police investigation involving drones, the painting remained missing until Brand traced it to a criminal organization that intended to use it as leverage to reduce a prison sentence. Brand negotiated with the organization, and on September 10, 2023, an anonymous man contacted him to arrange a handover in Amsterdam at night. Brand received the painting wrapped in packaging inside a blue IKEA bag and a pillowcase. He described the moment as one of the best of his life. The Dutch police confirmed the recovery, stating the painting is authentic. The museum confirmed it is the stolen work, noting some damage but overall good condition; a scientific examination will follow at the Singer Museum. The timeline for restoration and public display is yet to be determined.
