Stolen Castelvecchio paintings still in Ukraine as Veneto opens fall shows

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

Ten months after the theft of 17 paintings from Verona's Museo di Castelvecchio and four months after their recovery in Ukraine, the artworks remain in Kyiv, exhibited by President Petro Poroshenko. Mayor Flavio Tosi has proposed granting Poroshenko honorary citizenship. The Vatican's apostolic nuncio intervened in late August. Meanwhile, Verona hosts a Maya exhibition at Palazzo della Gran Guardia and a Picasso show at AMO di Palazzo Forti. In Vicenza, the Palladio Museum presents drawings and models of architect Vincenzo Scamozzi's Villa Molin alla Mandria. In Venice, the Fondazione Cini displays 'capolavori ritrovati' through November 15, and Palazzo Ducale runs 'Venezia, gli Ebrei e l’Europa. 1516-2016' until November 13, marking the Ghetto's 500th anniversary.
