Stevenson Gallery co-founder Andrew da Conceicao dies at 54
Andrew da Conceicao, who helped establish the influential Stevenson Gallery, has passed away. In 2003, he launched the gallery in Cape Town with partners Michael Stevenson and Kathy Grundlingh. The gallery's roster includes over thirty artists such as Wim Botha, Penny Siopis, Robin Rhode, and Meschac Gaba. Documenta 11, curated by Okwui Enwezor in 2002, inspired the founders to create a new platform for contemporary South African art. Da Conceicao noted that Goodman Gallery was the only local venue showing contemporary work alongside twentieth-century art at the time. Stevenson Gallery has since expanded to Johannesburg and Amsterdam. The founders aimed to represent talented artists locally who were already gaining recognition in Europe.
