Steven Holl Architects to Build Stone and Bamboo Library in Malawi

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Steven Holl Architects has received approval for a new library in Malawi, commissioned by The Miracle for Africa Foundation. The 6,000-square-meter structure will be built from local stone, bamboo, and reinforced concrete, featuring six unique prefabricated curvilinear roof elements with photovoltaic panels for energy self-sufficiency. A circular opening in the roof channels rainwater into an internal pool, which manages water flow and creates light reflections. The library's open plan includes glass-enclosed archive and conference rooms with humidity control, while perimeter bamboo screens filter light. Local labor will be employed, though construction timeline and costs remain undisclosed. The library is the first phase of a larger campus project with a pool and gym.
