Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects presents Richard Morrison and Bill Rice exhibition exploring gay history

Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York is presenting a poignant exhibition featuring photographer Richard Morrison and painter Bill Rice, two friends whose work emerges from the city's gay cultural history. The show includes a group portrait by Peter Hujar that captures Morrison, Rice, Hujar himself, and writer-sociologist Larry Mitchell in a moment of suspended animation. Morrison maintains a grounded presence in the photograph, reflecting his reputation as an elegant nonconformist. Rice, better known for his acting in underground films and performance art than for painting, is represented by works that capture the excitement of urban gay life in the 1970s. His paintings depict handsome Hispanic men at tenement windows and balconies, subtly referencing the abstraction of the city grid. The exhibition also features a monitor displaying video works that include Rice's collaborations with David Wojnarowicz. This presentation is part of a broader wave of gallery shows marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, creating an unofficial gay history month coinciding with Pride weekend. The exhibition runs through July 13 and includes additional works by Zoe Leonard alongside those by Hujar and Wojnarowicz.
