Steven Brower, Graphic Design Historian and Editor, Dies at 74

Steven Brower, a talented graphic designer, editor, and comic historian, passed away on July 26, 2026, at 74. His death was shared by Steven Heller in a column for PRINT Magazine. Brower dedicated much of his career to documenting the realms of graphic design and pop culture. He wrote and co-wrote several notable books, such as 'Satchmo: The Wonderful World and Art of Louis Armstrong' and 'Woody Guthrie Artworks' alongside Nora Guthrie. He also penned 'Fatal Femme Fatales' and collaborated with Seymour Chwast on 'The Mighty Elvis.' As the creative director of PRINT magazine, he later contributed online content and edited illustrations for The Nation. Brower also directed the MFA program at Marywood University, where he taught design. Heller highlighted Brower's humility and commitment to uncovering overlooked artists. Interestingly, he was also related to Milton Glaser.
