Steve Reich's Pendulum Music at Château de Fraïssé-des-Corbières

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From July 1 to August 28, 2011, Patrick des Gachons welcomes Steve Reich to his Château de Fraïssé-des-Corbières, featuring three installations of Pendulum Music throughout the castle. This piece, first showcased at the Whitney Museum on May 27, 1969, was a collaboration involving sculptor Richard Serra, composer James Tenney, video artist Bruce Nauman, and multimedia artist Michael Snow. Pendulum Music employs swinging microphones over speakers to generate feedback, which Reich characterizes as music where sound and composition are one. The exhibition places Reich within the 1960s minimalist music context, alongside figures like John Cage and Laurie Anderson. Des Gachons, a painter captivated by Mediterranean blues, finds a connection between his artwork and Reich's entrancing sounds. Other exhibitions include La Peinture autrement at Musée Chagall, Nice (June 26–November 7, 2011), Galerie du Tenyidor, Collioure (from August 27), and Galerie AL/MA, Montpellier (from September 30, 2011).
