Steve McQueen's 'Bass' Immersive Installation at Schaulager Basel Through November 2025
Steve McQueen's latest project, 'Bass,' set to debut in 2024, is his most abstract work yet. It will first be showcased at Dia Beacon in New York and later adapted for Schaulager in Basel, where it will be on display until 16 November 2025. This installation marks a shift from McQueen's traditional filmmaking, focusing solely on light and sound. It features over 1,000 LED tubes cycling through colors and subwoofers producing deep bass. Collaborating with bassist Marcus Miller and a diverse group of Black diaspora musicians, including Meshell Ndegeocello and Aston Barrett Jr., McQueen aims to highlight music's narrative power. The installation transforms Schaulager's space, creating an immersive environment that invites audiences to reflect on their own histories. McQueen, celebrated for works like '12 Years a Slave,' won the Turner Prize in 1999 and represented the UK at the 2009 Venice Biennale. His recent film, 'Grenfell,' is touring venues including MAC Belfast and Tate Liverpool.
