Steve McQueen knighted, Tim Marlow and David Shrigley receive OBEs in New Year Honours

In the Queen's New Year Honours, artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen was knighted for his contributions to cinema, including films such as 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Widows (2018). McQueen, whose portraits of all London Year 3 pupils are currently on view at Tate Britain, had previously received an OBE in 2002 and a CBE in 2011. Tim Marlow, outgoing artistic director of the Royal Academy of Arts and newly appointed chief executive and director of the Design Museum, was awarded an OBE. Artist David Shrigley, known for his whimsical drawings, also received an OBE. A total of 1,097 people received awards, with half being women, nine percent from ethnic minorities, three percent identifying as LGBT+, and 11 percent having a disability.
