Steve McQueen and Marian Goodman launch Okwui Enwezor memorial initiative for BIPOC curators

institutional · 2026-04-20

Marian Goodman, a gallerist, has unveiled a new curatorial initiative to honor Okwui Enwezor's (1963–2019) legacy, in collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI). This program, envisioned by artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen, aims to provide research and educational resources for emerging BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) curators. McQueen emphasized the initiative's role in supporting innovators in a field transformed by Enwezor, who advocated for a more inclusive art environment. The initial phase will feature a 'curatorial intensive' in Africa for 12 to 14 participants, offering mentorship and peer support through ICI's network. Starting this spring, ICI will also introduce two annual fellowships for BIPOC curators in the US and internationally, lasting three years and facilitating independent research with financial backing and travel opportunities. Enwezor was celebrated for promoting African art and its diaspora, challenging conventional European and North American narratives.
