Steve McCurry's 'Uplands&Icons' Exhibition Opens in Biella
The historic town of Biella hosts a major Steve McCurry exhibition from December 6, 2024, to May 18, 2025. Curated by Biba Giacchetti, 'Uplands&Icons' presents 128 photographs across two venues: Palazzo Gromo Losa and Palazzo Ferrero. The first section, at Palazzo Gromo Losa, features about 100 images of highland landscapes and people from Tibet, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Japan, Ethiopia, Burma, Nepal, and Brazil. The second section, at Palazzo Ferrero, displays over 20 iconic works including the 1984 portrait of Sharbat Gula, the Afghan girl with green eyes, taken at a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan. A concurrent photography contest, 'In Montagna,' runs from November 6, 2024, to March 6, 2025, open to professionals and amateurs. The jury, chaired by McCurry and including Giacchetti, will select winners whose works will be exhibited from April 18 to May 18, 2025. Giacchetti describes the mountain peoples as bearing 'signs of an existence marked by harsh rules and an ancestral bond with nature,' captured with depth and respect by McCurry.
