Steve McCurry's Umbria Photographs at Montefalco

Photographer Steve McCurry (born 1950 in Philadelphia) returns to Umbria after more than a decade with sixty photographs—both unpublished and archival—on view at the Complesso museale di San Francesco in Montefalco until May 3, 2026. Curated by Biba Giacchetti, the exhibition presents a visual narrative of Umbria's history, places, and traditions, covering towns including Montefalco, Gubbio, Foligno, Bevagna, Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Spoleto, Trevi, and Lake Trasimeno. Giacchetti describes McCurry's approach as immersive, entering into lives, homes, workshops, and traditions, and notes that the region welcomed him with discreet gentleness and deep authenticity. She states that McCurry encountered world stars at prestigious festivals, artisans working with centuries-old patience, contemporary artists reinventing tradition, custodians of ancient festivals, and people who opened their doors like long-awaited friends. The curator adds that the images aim to convey the sense of magic Umbria creates effortlessly, especially through its inhabitants, forming an emotional map of an ongoing journey—a tribute to kindness, the long time of gestures, the strength of roots, and the surprising delicacy of the region.
