Stephen Shore Presents New Digital Work as Photo London's 2019 Master of Photography

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Stephen Shore, the American photographer recognized for elevating color photography in the 1970s, has been named Photo London's Master of Photography 2019. He is presenting two previously unseen bodies of work in Europe at Somerset House, London, from May 16 to 19. The exhibition includes his latest project, Details, featuring large-scale prints approximately 4 by 5.5 feet, created with a Hasselblad X1D digital camera. These images, which share formal qualities with his Instagram posts, achieve a level of detail surpassing his earlier large-format work. Also shown are 60 photographs from Los Angeles in 1969, a series first exhibited at MoMA and recently published as a book. Shore explains that modern high-end digital technology now fulfills the pursuit of detail he began decades ago, opening new aesthetic possibilities. A larger exhibition of the Details series is planned at Sprüth Magers in Los Angeles, including very recent work. Shore's career has been marked by major institutional exhibitions at venues like the Hammer Museum, Fundación Mapfre, and MoMA.
