Stephen Mueller's abstract paintings explore cosmic spheres at Lennon, Weinberg gallery
From October 21 to November 27, 2010, Stephen Mueller showcased a collection of new paintings and works on paper at Lennon, Weinberg, Inc. in New York City. This exhibition was significant as it was his first solo show in New York since 2006 and his debut with this gallery. Mueller's artwork is characterized by bold, vivid colors such as purples, pinks, turquoise, and yellow, meticulously balanced to steer clear of kitsch. His abstract designs generate illusionistic spaces where opaque shapes juxtapose with translucent backgrounds, reminiscent of cosmic spheres in suspended animation. These iconic forms draw upon art historical references and cultural artifacts, hinting at deeper truths and enigmatic philosophies. Additionally, several pieces feature solid color side banners that act as theatrical curtains, framing the visual narrative. Influences in his work span Northern European Romanticism, Far Eastern mysticism, Renaissance masters, and ethnic decorative styles. This exhibition coincided with Thomas Nozkowski's presentation at Pace Gallery and Brice Marden's installations at Matthew Marks, fostering a dialogue about abstract painting in Chelsea.
